New dwelling settlement opened in Chechnya for resettlers from the centre

On June 13, an opening ceremony was held in the new settlement in the Chechen village of Kurchaloy. Residents resettled from the centre believe that they will not soon get used to living in the outskirt.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in winter in Kurchaloy, 38 private houses were demolished. The authorities explained it by the need to reconstruct the village.

The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" reported that on February 5, authorities announced Kurchaloy residents about demolition of 37 private houses on five streets for the sake of building a shopping centre. Among these houses was the family house of the arrested human rights activist Oyub Titiev. The demolition of houses in Kurchaloy led to a mass eviction of residents.

The new settlement has 64 newly-built houses, the office of the republic's head and the government has reported.

A source from the office said that the Akhmat-Hajji Kadyrov Foundation had allocated 48 bicycles for the children who will live in the new settlement.

On June 13, a report about the opening of a new settlement in Kurchaloy was shown on the "Grozny" TV Channel. In it, local residents thanked the republic's authorities for their new housing.

However, the resettlers expressed doubts about the quality of the construction works and told that the resettlement to the outskirt, though into new houses, upsets them.

"The houses have been allocated; they are really large, with all the conditions. But earlier we lived in the centre; everything was close – shops, a school, a hospital, and now we have to get there by covering a few kilometres. Thus, there are more contras than pros," said Khava, a local resident.
