Armenian MoD treats death of an officer as suicide

According to investigators, Captain Amayak Akopyan, found dead, had committed suicide. This was reported by David Tonoyan, the chief for the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 26, the Amayak Akopyan's body with a gunshot wound was found in a bedroom of a military unit.

The Minister of Defence reports that according to the statistics of suicides in the Armed Forces of Armenia, given the age of soldiers and officers and other data, the number of suicides "is considerably lower even in comparison with most professional armies." Meanwhile, David Tonoyan believes it is necessary to strengthen the work with personnel to reduce such incidents, the "News.am" reports.

Earlier, on May 22, in Armenia, Martin Khachatryan, a 20-year-old regular soldier, who was in line of duty, was found dead. Prior to that, on May 6, a body of soldier Levon Torosyan, who was also in line of duty, was found in a military unit of the republic, and on May 4, soldier Arthur Gasparyan was found dead.
