Azerbaijani journalist Afghan Sadygov released from prison

On the first day at large, Afghan Sadygov, who was recognized as a political prisoner, announced he would continue his journalistic activities.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Supreme Court (SC) of Azerbaijan reduced the punishment down to 1.5 years of imprisonment to Afghan Sadygov, a founder and editor of the socio-political website "Azel.tv", sentenced for attacking a woman at a reception room of an official.

Afghan Sadygov pleaded not guilty. The journalist was included in the list of 167 political prisoners, released by the Centre for the Protection of Political Prisoners on January 27, 2017.

Today, after the expiration of his sentence, journalist Afghan Sadygov has been released, reports the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to Afghan Sadygov, he intends to continue his journalistic activities, despite the risk of imprisonment. "In Azerbaijan, journalists like me are thrown into prisons to keep silence. But silence is like suicide for me. So, I will continue my journalistic activities as earlier. We, the journalists, should not remain indifferent to the problems of ordinary people. We should write articles to show the truth and not be afraid of that," Afghan Sadygov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to the journalist, he intends to restore the activities of his website "Azel.tv" in the near future.
