In Armenia, action in support of Samvel Babayan resumed
Today, activists have come to a protest action in front of the building of the Constitutional Court of Armenia with the demand to acquit Samvel Babayan, the former head of the Ministry of Defence for Nagorno-Karabakh.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 18, more than 50 participants of the protest action "Armenia without Political Prisoners" who demanded the release of Samvel Babayan and the resignation of Arthur Davtyan, General Prosecutor of Armenia, marched from the building of the General Prosecutor's Office to the building of the Cassation Court of Armenia.
On November 28, 2017, the court found Samvel Babayan, the former head of the Ministry of Defence for Nagorno-Karabakh, guilty of involvement in importing the "Igla" MANPADS (man-portable air defence system) into Armenia and sentenced him to six years of imprisonment. The opposition and Samvel Babayan himself called his arrest politically motivated.
Today, in Yerevan, activists have held another protest in support of Samvel Babayan in front of the Cassation Court of Armenia.
Participants of the protest action were chanting "Freedom to Samvel Babayan!" In their hands, they were holding posters with photographs of Samvel Babayan and General Prosecutor Arthur Davtyan, whose resignation they demanded.
The activists have expressed their hope that in the coming days, the Cassation Court of Armenia will accept the Samvel Babayan's case to consideration, change pre-trial restriction measure to the form not related to detention in custody, and then acquit him.
