Nagorno-Karabakh combines Easter church traditions with an attempt to attract tourists

Residents of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh have celebrated the holiday of Easter (Zatik) in temples and home-made feasts. In Nagorno-Karabakh, traditional Easter events were combined with national games, exhibitions, and dances. The authorities hope that church holidays will attract tourists.

On April 1, all churches of Nagorno-Karabakh hosted divine services and festive events.

At home, Armenian believers arranged traditional tables with obligatory dishes of fish, pilaf with raisins, red-dyed eggs and dishes of green vegetables.

The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates Easter under the Gregorian calendar. Zatik falls on the Sunday, following the full moon, which came after the spring equinox.

Facebook users from Armenia and Armenians living in Russia shared their families' traditions.

"My Armenian relatives and friends taught me to appreciate the warmth of the sun and close people," wrote user Margarita Aivazyan.

"My grandmother taught me the prayer 'Our Father' in Russian and how to bless oneself under a solemn tale (in Armenian)," wrote Irina Arzumanova.
