Board of Nasyr-Kort Mosque urged Chumakov to remain its Imam

After considering Imam Khamzat Chumakov's statement about his intent to leave the post of the Imam, the members of the board of the Nasyr-Kort Mosque in Ingushetia, recommended him to remain in the post. The Board's decision is of a recommendatory nature and legally does not oblige Chumakov to anything, said Bagaudin Khautiev, a community member.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 23, Khamzat Chumakov announced his intention to leave the post of the Imam of the Nasyr-Kort Mosque.

Khamzat Chumakov is a preacher popular among the believers who became well-known for his sermons and video appeals, in which he denounced corruption among officials. On September 14, 2010, in the area of the Ekazhevo village in the Nazran District, an assassination attempt was committed against Khamzat Chumakov, as a result of which the Imam was seriously injured.

"We, the Board of the Nasyr-Kort Mosque, state hereby that Khamzat should remain in the post of the Imam and continue his important mission during this difficult time for our country," says the today's statement of the Board of the Mosque, which consists of 20 community members.

Stating that Imam Chumakov has contributed to the de-radicalization of the Muslim community in the region, the resolution also reads, "Thanks to Imam Chumakov, many young people in Ingushetia formed in their minds a categorically negative attitude to extremism, terrorism, corruption and drug addiction. It was in much from Khamzat Chumakov's sermons, the young generation learned about the real danger of all these phenomena for the people."

The Board's decision is of a recommendatory nature, Bagaudin Khautiev, a community member, has noted. "Imam Chumakov will pay attention to the Board's statement, when making his final decision, but legally it does not oblige him to anything," Mr Khautiev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
