Advocate complains about GPO's inaction after torture of Nardaran believers

The Azerbaijani General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) has refused to open criminal cases on facts of torture of two convicts in the "Nardaran case", and failed to provide the defence with refusal statements, said Yalchin Imanov, one of the advocates, adding that he has filed a lawsuit against the GPO.

On November 26, 2015, 14 people were detained in Nardaran during a law enforcers’ special operation, including Talekh Bagirzade, the leader of the "Muslim Unity" Movement. This provoked unrests, in the course of which seven people were killed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Agil Ismailov and Bakhruz Askerov, convicts under the "Nardaran case", claimed that they had been tortured.

Yalchin Imanov has reminded that Askerov and Ismailov were detained during a special operation held in Nardaran in November 2015. According to the advocate, law enforcers tortured them. "Bakhruz Askerov still has a bullet in his leg and, like Ismailov, injuries in the head from rubber bullets. Ismailov's face has traces of bodily injuries – the consequences of beatings. Unfortunately, the first-instance court has ignored their complaints about torture," advocate Imanov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today.

On June 10, 2017, the defence applied to the GPO to achieve an inquiry into Askerov's and Ismailov's torture; however, according to Mr Imanov, no response has been received so far.
