Azerbaijan supports territorial integrity of Spain

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has commented on the independence from Spain declared by the Catalan Parliament and mentioned the origin of the Karabakh conflict.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 1, a referendum was held in Catalonia, and more than 90% of its participants supported the idea of the Catalonia's independence.

Azerbaijan stands for a peaceful settlement of the conflict situation based on the Constitution and laws of Spain, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports with reference to the statement disseminated by the Azerbaijani MFA.

"The Republic of Azerbaijan supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Spanish Kingdom within its internationally recognized borders," announces the statement voiced today by Khikmet Gadjiev, the spokesman for the Azerbaijani MFA.

Illegal attempts to violate the territorial integrity of the country in contradiction with the will of the people and the central authorities are unacceptable, emphasized Khikmet Gadjiev. He has mentioned the origin of the Karabakh conflict.

"In the late 1980s, separatism in the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region of the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) was accompanied by a gross violation of the Constitution of the USSR and the laws of the Azerbaijani SSR," announces the statement released by the Azerbaijani MFA.

"After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Armenia launched an open war against Azerbaijan by occupying Nagorno-Karabakh and seven other regions. The aggression of Armenia against Azerbaijan is still ongoing," summarized the spokesman for the Azerbaijani MFA.
