ECtHR communicates Khadija Ismayilova's complaint against ban on leaving Azerbaijan

Journalist Khadija Ismayilova filed a complaint about the delay in the trial concerning the ban on her leaving Azerbaijan. Today, an advocate of the journalist has reported that the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) began communication on his client's complaint.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Khadija Ismayilova appealed to the Binagadi District Court of Baku with a request to allow her to temporarily leave Azerbaijan to participate in journalistic courses in Riga. On December 8, 2016, the Supreme Court (SC) of Azerbaijan upheld the ban on leaving Azerbaijan for Khadija Ismayilova who was serving her conditional sentence.

Khadija Ismayilova is well-known for investigating corruption in Azerbaijan. In September 2015, the court sentenced her to 7.5 years of imprisonment on economic charges.

According to advocate Fariz Namazly, the Azerbaijani legislation allows persons who are serving their conditional sentences to temporarily leave the country under an appropriate court's decision. The advocate treats the persistent refusal for Khadija Ismayilova to leave the country as a manifestation of bias attitude toward the journalist.

"The Judge has referred to the failure of public prosecutor and bailiff to appear at court hearing and postponed the consideration of the appeal to October 10," Khadija Ismayilova said.

Khadija Ismayilova was awarded by the Swedish Right Livelihood Award Foundation the "For a Correct Lifestyle" prize for "courage and fortitude in exposing corruption at the highest state level." This award is often called an alternative Nobel Prize, the Deutsche Welle reports.
