Police treat mine explosion of militant and two policemen in Chechnya as sudden accident

The mine explosion in the Vedeno District occurred during the investigating experiment, the Chechen Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) ha stated. According to the head of a local NGO, the explosion killed Abbas Kuzhulov was killed, who could be forced to show the hideout in the forest by kidnapping his relatives.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the alleged militant was killed and two policemen were injured in the vicinity of Vedeno on September 21.

In 2016, the above 60-year-old local resident, who was killed near the village of Kharachoy, was convicted for taking part in bandit formations. He was serving his term outside of Chechnya, but now was convoyed to the republic for some investigating activities, said a law enforcement source, adding, "The convict was actively helping investigators: the day before his death he showed the place of a large militants’ hideout."

Power agents treat the mine explosion as an accident. "There are many mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), grenades and unexploded ordnance in mountainous wooded areas; and, apparently, they stepped on an old land mine," said the MIA source.

According to a collective statement posted on the Facebook on September 14, Abbaz Kuzhulov’s three children, elder brother and daughter-in-law were also kidnapped by law enforcers in Chechnya.
