Armenian activist declares hunger strike in prison

Since September 13, Hayk Kuregyan, a sentenced activist, is on hunger strike. This has been reported today by the Armenian Ministry of Justice (MoJ). According to the activist's father, the protest action of his son is of political nature.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 15, 2015, Hayk Kuregyan was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment on the charge of opening fire near the courthouse during a hearing in the case against participants of the opposition "March of Million Masks". According to investigators' version, he wounded five policemen from a pneumatic pistol. Advocates of Hayk Kuregyan filed a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

Today, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has been informed by Gor Glechyan, the chief of the press service for the Criminal Penitentiary Department of the Armenian Ministry of Justice, that Hayk Kuregyan declared hunger strike on September 13.

According to the Gor Glechyan's report, while declaring the hunger strike, Hayk Kuregyan did not specify the reason for it.

Toda, Armenak Kyuregyan, the father of Hayk Kuregyan, has learned about his son's hunger strike. "So far I can only say that his demands are related to Serzh Sargsyan (President of Armenia, – note of the 'Caucasian Knot')," wrote Armenak Kuregyan on his Facebook page.
