Two KChR natives accused of involvement in Shamil Basaev's grouping

A case against two members of the Karachai Jamaat accused of involvement in an attack on Russian soldiers and officers committed in 1999 and led by Shamil Basaev and Khattab has been brought to court. This was reported by the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO).

According to investigators, two natives of the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR) joined the Karachai Jamaat in 1999, and on October 4, together with other armed groupings led by Shamil Basaev and Khattab, they attacked soldiers and officers from the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) in the area of the Chervlyonnaya Cossack village in the Shelkovskoy District of Chechnya. As a result of the attack, 15 soldiers were killed and eight others were wounded.

Both defendants in the case have been charged with involvement in a criminal grouping and attempt on lives of soldiers and officers. Other members of the Shamil Basaev's grouping were put on the wanted list, the Russian GPO’s website reports.
