"Novaya Gazeta": scandal with torture in Chechnya draws Kremlin’s attention

The repentance action of Grozny residents, who wrote a letter about torture to the Prosecutor General, did not take place, because of the intervention of the administration of Russian President, after Kadyrov's conversation with the head of the Chechen FSB Department. This was reported by the “Novaya Gazeta”.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 18, according to the “Novaya Gazeta”, power agents staged a mass repentance in Grozny of local residents who had signed an appeal to the Russian Prosecutor General with a complaint about the torture of relatives of Magomed Taramov and Djamalai Tazbiev. However, the action did not take place.

Taramov and Tazbiev declared their innocence and told about torture. A letter to Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika, signed by more than a hundred residents of Chechnya, was sent on August 17.

The Presidential Administration interfered in what was happening after Ramzan Kadyrov had invited Igor Khvostikov, the head of the FSB Department for Chechnya, and asked about his involvement in the letter to Mr Chaika, the “Novaya Gazeta” reports.

According to the newspaper, "obviously, Khvostikov’s explanations failed to convince the Chechen leadership." Therefore, Bortnikov, FSB Director, and then the Presidential Administration, had to interfere in the situation."

  • Pre-planned nature is distinctive feature of attack on journalist Khoroshilov

The actions of the man who attacked Igor Khoroshilov, a Rostov journalist, were prepared in advance, which excludes any spontaneous conflict. At the same time, the absence of direct proofs of links of the attack with Igor’s professional activities will allow law enforcers to treat the incident as a domestic conflict, lawyers have pointed out.
