Giyas Ibragimov's mother complains about her son's torture at penal colony

Activist Giyas Ibragimov was beaten in the Baku penal colony No. 2. This has been reported by his mother Shura Amiraslanova. Officials from the penitentiary service have denied the information about torture.

On May 10, 2016, Bairam Mamedov, an activist of the movement "Nida" and Giyas Ibragimov, a Facebook user, were detained in Baku. They claimed being persecuted for graffiti on the pedestal of the monument to Heidar Aliev.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 25, 2016, the Baku Court for Grave Crimes sentenced Giyas Ibragimov to 10 years of imprisonment on the charge of illicit drug trafficking.

On July 7, Shura Amiraslanova, the mother of the activist, visited her son in the penal colony. "About 20 days ago, since the verdict against him came into force, Giyas was transferred from SIZO (pre-trial prison) to the penal colony. I received no information from him and thy explained that fact by a so-called 'quarantine' period for newly arrived prisoners. However, it turned out that right on the same day, he was placed in a punishment cell for 15 days," said Shura Amiraslanova.

According to the activist's mother, while her son was kept in the punishment cell, one of the law enforcers insulted him by calling him a "drug dealer." "Although everyone knows that the actual reason for his arrest was graffiti on the monument. Giyas could not stand the insult and told the warder that drugs were sold by people like him," said Shura Amiraslanova.

After that, Giyas Ibragimov was handcuffed, taken out of the punishment cell and beaten, the woman claims.

The activist has asked his mother to inform the public that his life in the penal colony is in danger. "We have no guarantees that torture will not be resumed," noted Shura Amiraslanova. The woman has announced her intention to hold a picket in front of the presidential administration.
