Faig Amirov's wife fears for his life

The health condition of Faig Amirov, the financial director of the "Azadlyg" newspaper, accused of inciting inter-religious enmity, has deteriorated, said his wife Lala Amirli.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Faig Amirov, an assistant to the chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was detained on August 20, 2016. In April 2017, he was additionally accused of tax evasion.

According to investigators, Amirov had kept books related to the Turkish preacher Fethullah Gülen. The opposition believes that association with Gülen is used as a pretext for arresting activists.

The defence has used all legal mechanisms to release Amirov from custody, said Fakhraddin Mekhtiev, his advocate.

"Courts have rejected all our petitions. The further responsibility for Amirov's health and life is on the authorities. We have already appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)," he has stressed.
