Safarov served his three-day punishment in dungeon

On March 10, the former investigator Rufat Safarov, who is serving his sentence on the bribe-taking case, told at the meeting with his mother that he had been again placed into the dungeon (punishment cell) on March 6-9.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 8, 2016, Rufat Safarov, a former investigator of the Zerdab District Prosecutor's Office, was sentenced to 9 years in prison on charges of a repeated bribe-taking. Safarov himself refused to admit his guilt, stating the political nature of his case.

"After the dungeon he looked exhausted; he had no enough power to speak. For three days, Rufat only drank water; from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the bed made of wooden planks was raised to the wall and locked – all this time, Rufat had to stand on a cold concrete floor," says the application of his mother, Takhira Safarova, which was received by the "Caucasian Knot" in the evening on March 10.

She asks the addressees of her application – the mass media and local and international human rights organizations – to increase attention to her son’s case.

She writes that her son complained about poor-quality food, as well as about the fact that he was deprived of his diary, which he had run in custody before he got into the dungeon.

Her son "is being punished for having raised his voice in protest against injustice," Ms Safarova writes.

The second placement of Rufat Safarov into the dungeon over the last six weeks evidences the intention to toughen his detention regime, his father Eldar Sabiroglu believes.

  • Lawyers comment on scandal with equipment sale on behalf of "Akhmat" special unit

Lawyers have noted that it is practically impossible to hold the scammers accountable for the fact that they had sold stolen property, posing themselves as fighters of the "Akhmat" Chechen special unit. But these actions have seriously discredited the "Akhmat"; and it's possible that Chechnya's enemies are behind this, a political analyst has suggested.
