In 2016, journalists express increased interest in contest in memory of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev

On January 30, the jury of the contest held in memory of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev will complete the evaluation of journalistic materials nominated for the award in 2016. The number of the texts submitted to the contest has grown in comparison with the previous year.

Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev, a journalist of the "Caucasian Knot", was shot in Dagestan on July 9, 2013. He lived in one of the "hot" regions of Northern Caucasus, and he covered urgent issues, including human rights violations in Dagestan, crimes committed by law enforcers, and persecution of believers.

On October 1, 2014, the "Caucasian Knot" together with the Russian Union of Journalists (RUJ) established the annual award in memory of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev for journalists writing about the Caucasus.

In 2016, 28 texts and two video reports were submitted to the contest. The authors raised the problems that caused resonance not only in the Caucasus but also beyond its region.

Texts nominated by experts of jury

The number of the nominated materials includes the article written by Elena Kostyuchenko and posted in the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta". The article describes the life of parents who lost their children 12 years ago in the terror act in Beslan. The journalist was attacked when she was collecting the material for her article, but the text was still published.

At the website of the "Mediazona", Ilya Sologub described how policemen from Anapa tortured a suspect with electric current and raped him with a stick to force him to confess to robbery, and the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) did not see any "unlawful methods of interrogation."

In her material published on the website of the "Kavkaz.Realii", Alexandra Garmazhapova wrote how residents of the Kaliningrad Region used the name of Ramzan Kadyrov as a brand to draw attention to their problems.

Ilya Zhegulev, a journalist of the "Meduza", described how Chechnya takes control over the local oil industry.

Texts of regional publications and Russian-language editions of the South Caucasus were also submitted to the contest.

So, in the article "Do not believe, but fear and ask..." published by the Dagestani newspaper "Chernovik" (Draft), Mairbek Agaev and Saida Vagabova drew the readers' attention to the problem of Ramazan Djalaldinov, a resident of the village of Kenkhi, who criticized Ramzan Kadyrov.

In her material "To live or to die", Stella Adleiba from the "JamNews" described the prospects of development of medicine in Abkhazia and explained why Abkhazians go to Georgia for medical treatment.

In the material "We rushed to a well to get water and wash out this dirt" on the "Azadliq Radio" (the Azerbaijani service of the "Radio Liberty"), Sevindj Alieva reported on the results of the trial in the case against Giyasv Ibragimov and Bairam Mamedov, "prisoners of the monument."

This year, video reports about the problems of the Caucasus were nominated for the award for the first time.

In his report on the "Dozhd" (Rain) TV Channel, Vasily Polonsky described how law enforcers prevented miners, demanding to repay wage arrears, from going to Moscow.

In his video report on the "Nastoyaschee Vremya" (Real Time), Timur Olevsky described the reaction of the Russian Supreme Court (SC) to media reports about beating of the chairman of the Chechen Supreme Court by one of the closest associates of Ramzan Kadyrov.

Texts sent via feedback

The number of the texts sent by readers includes the material by Ragimat Adamova, who described the life of inmates of orphanage for mentally retarded children "Zabota" (Care) in Dagestan.

In her article "Women subjected to female circumcision do the same for their daughters", Svetlana Anokhina spoke about the practice of female circumcision in Dagestan.

Journalist Eduard Uruzaev highlighted the problem of violations committed at the elections of September 18 in Dagestan.

Nominees of the "Caucasian Knot"

Magomed Tuaev reported about the conflict provoked by the fatwa, adopted at the theological conference in Grozny.

Rustam Djalilov covered the topic of the Grozny fatwa through the prism of the role of the Chechen leader in inter-Islamic dialogue.

Anna Gileva reported on the refusal of Moscow officials to coordinate actions in memory of Circassians killed in the Caucasian war.

Anna Gritsevich highlighted the problem, which was ignored by many media covering the construction of the Kerch Bridge. Construction of the strategic facility, controlled by the top-ranking officials of Russia, sharpened the water supply problem faced by residents of the Taman Peninsula.

Svetlana Kravchenko prepared the material reporting how Sochi residents accused officials of barbaric cutting down of a poplar planted by Yuri Gagarin.

Tatiana Gantimurova reported on the problem of shortage of gyms in Ingushetia, despite huge interest of local residents in wrestling and victories of Ingush athletes at international competitions.

In his article covering the problems of Chechen refugees in Europe, Akhmed Aldebirov reported "How to go to Europe and get refugee status."
