Defence demands to cancel sentence of Azerbaijani journalist Ikram Ragimov

On January 17, the Sumgait Court of Appeal of Azerbaijan held a preliminary hearing on the appeal against the sentence of Ikram Ragimov, editor-in-chief of the website "realliq.info", accused of defamation. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told about it by Elchin Sadygov, an advocate of Ikram Ragimov.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 25, 2016, the Sumgait City Court sentenced Ikram Ragimov, an editor-in-chief of the information portal "realliq.info", to one year of imprisonment. On April 17, in Sumgait, during the preliminary consideration of an appeal against the sentence of Ikram Ragimov, the defence requested a retrial at the Narimanov District Court of Baku.

The advocate believes that the consideration of the case at the Sumgait City Court and pronouncement of the sentence was illegal.

"We were told by the judges that during a week, they would examine the case, look through the recommendations of the Plenum of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan for action in such situations, and the Court will pronounce its decision therein," noted Elchin Sadygov.

Officials from the Sumgait Court of Appeal of Azerbaijan have told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the next hearing is scheduled for January 26 and it will pronounce a decision concerning the request filed by the defence.
