Seismologists are concerned about chaotic build-up in Makhachkala

Chaotic high-rise build-up has covered most of Makhachkala, seismologists assert. Violations in construction of high-rise buildings may lead to destruction thereof in case of a strong earthquake, residents of Makhachkala are afraid.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 1 and 11, earth tremors of about 3 power points were fixed in the territory of Dagestan. According to the regional Ministry for Emergencies (MfE), there were no victims and damages.

In Dagestan, "there are objects especially exposed to seismic activity," said Shamil Idarmachev, the head of the laboratory of geodynamics and seismology of the Geology Institute of the Dagestani Scientific Centre (DSC) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

In his opinion, in the first place, this is the "area of the Chirkey HPP, where small tremors occur constantly."

Vasily Cherkashin, the Director of the above Geology Institute, has drawn attention to the fact that "there are state standards on building in seismically dangerous areas."

"Houses should have proper spaces from each other, depending on their height; access roads for special machinery should be ensured, and other things," he said, as quoted by the "Izvestia Makhachkala" newspaper.
