Tbilisi: supporters of homeless people threaten to go on hunger strike

Authorities should adopt a law "On Homeless Persons" and assign the appropriate status to people who have lost their homes, said the protesters who rallied near the Parliament of Georgia. Should the authorities protract with the bill, activists of the "Union of Unemployed for Employment" and the "Free Generation" promise to go on hunger strike.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 19 the participants of the action said that the above NGOs had drafted the respective bill, which should define the status of an officially homeless person. According to the above Union, the census conducted in Tbilisi revealed 2360 homeless families.

The NGO's database of homeless persons includes the families, who lost their homes as a result of natural disasters, because of mortgage loans, or social problems. At the same time, according to the National Agency of Public Registry of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia, today in Tbilisi 86,000 families are expecting eviction, and are practically homeless, the "News-Georgia" reports.

Several dozen people have gathered outside the building of the Parliament in Tbilisi demanding to adopt a new law "On Homeless Persons". Activists of the above NGOs, who had organized the action, threatened to go on hunger strike if the adoption process is too slow, the "Sputnik Georgia" reports.
