Protesters in Poti have no rights to get new housing, authorities assert

The protest action held by refugees from Abkhazia living in the Georgian port of Poti was stopped; their demand to provide them with new housing will be rejected, said the Ministry for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The above action was held on September 10 in Poti near the office of the "Georgian Dream", where the IDPs stated that the government "had once again cheated them" by not providing the promised apartments in the new residential complex. The action was organized by about 20 families.

The above Ministry has made a statement, explaining that the condition of buildings is assessed by a commission composed of Ministry experts and professional builders: they examine buildings and define their status by awarding conditional points. The poorer the residence conditions, the more conventional points are assigned to the house.

Since the houses now inhabited by refugees in Poti failed to gain the required points and were found fit for residence, the Ministry decided to move other families – also refugees from Abkhazia and South Ossetia – into new apartment blocks.
