Chechnya marked Day of Memory and Grief of republic's nations

On May 10, Chechnya marked the Day of Memory and Grief of the nations of Chechnya, which was set up as the date of the official mourning for the victims of the 1944 deportation and military campaigns. Many locals believe that the mourning day for the victims of deportation was deliberately dated to the mourning for the former President Akhmat Kadyrov, who was killed on May 9, 2004.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that May 10 was fixed as the date of official mourning by an order of the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov in 2011. On May 10, 2004, the funeral was held of the first President of Chechnya Akhmat Kadyrov, who was killed in a suicide attack at the Grozny "Dynamo" Stadium on the eve – on May 9, 2004. Until then, Chechnya had marked the Memorial Day on February 23, the day of the deportation of Chechens and Ingushes to Kazakhstan and Central Asia in 1944.

On May 10, the authorities mentioned nothing about the victims of deportation, said the head of a local NGO on condition of anonymity.

"It all comes down solely to Akhmat Kadyrov, his life, work and death. Thus, there is a clear substitution of the mourning for hundreds of thousands of victims of the 1944 deportation by the remembrance of Ramzan Kadyrov's father," said the source.
