Timur Tangiev, kept in Grozny SIZO, attempts suicide and goes on hunger strike

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that Timur Tangiev, who is kept in SIZO (pre-trial prison) No. 1 of the Department for the Chechen Republic of the Russian Penitentiary Service (known as UFSIN), complains about threats and unfair treatment that he receives from law enforcers – in protest he cut his wrists, but survived. For his attempted suicide Tangiev was placed into the dungeon for 15 days, said his mother.

On October 5, 2004, Timur Tangiev, a resident of Grozny, was found guilty by the Supreme Court of the Chechen Republic of committing grave and especially grave crimes and sentenced to 24 years of imprisonment. On February 16, 2014, the Presidium of the Supreme Court decided to send his criminal case for a new trial in connection with a violation of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR).

Grigor Avetisyan, Tangiev's advocate, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that his client attempted suicide after law enforcers had repeatedly visited him and demanded from him to refuse from his testimonies, where he asserted that he was forced to confess of incriminated crimes under torture.
