New draft on recognizing Armenian Genocide brought into US Senate

Robert Menendez, the Chairman of the Senate Committee for Foreign Affairs, and Senator Mark Kirk have submitted to the US Congress a draft resolution calling on the President to promote the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. The authors believe that the USA should recognize the Armenian Genocide.

According to the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), the adoption of the resolution would help "to establish fair and constructive Armenian-Turkish relations."

The resolution, inter alia, calls on to mark April 24 as the anniversary of Genocide, as well as appeals to the US President to promote "fair, constructive, stable and strong Armenian-Turkish relations, which include full recognition of Armenian Genocide by the Turkish Govt."

Some countries will mark April 24 as the Day of Remembrance of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. In particular, on April 22, in the Netherlands, in The Hague, a protest action will be held, where participants plan to recall not only the Genocide in 1915, but also the recent events in the Syrian city of Kesab.

As of today, more than 20 countries in the world have recognized the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey; among them Canada, Argentina, Switzerland, Russia, Belgium, France, Poland, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Uruguay, Greece, Cyprus, the Vatican and others.
