Taganrog residents protest against construction of Mormon religious building

Residents of Taganrog held a rally to protest against the existence in the city centre of the temple complex of the religious association of the Church of Jesus of Latter-Day Saints in Russia, parishioners of which are called Mormons. The protest action was held on December 21; and according to various sources, it was attended by 30-80 persons.

The future church is built in the place of a former cafe in Vostochnaya Street of Taganrog, which was bought out by the members of the religious organization in 2007. Some local residents believe that the permit to build a religious building should have been issued after public hearings, which were not held on that occasion.

The December 21 protest was initiated by the society "Russian Community", some public organizations and Cossacks, the "Novaya Gazeta v Yuzhnom Federalnom" reports, noting that the protest action was attended by about 80 persons.
