Chechnya: the number of AIDS patients goes up

This year has marked an increased number of HIV/AIDS cases among residents of the Chechen Republic in comparison with 2012, says the local Ministry of Public Health.

According to the Ministry, within 11 months of this year 202 HIV-infected patients were diagnosed in Chechnya. "Last year, during this period we revealed 200 such cases. In total, 2104 AIDS patients are registered in the republic, although the actual number of HIV-infected people can be much higher, as many of them seek medical help only when the disease reaches its final stage," the Ministry has reported.

Chechnya has 118 AIDS patients per 100,000 of population. "This is a very serious figure. By the number of HIV/AIDS patients the republic is in the top four among the regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD)," said a source from the Ministry.
