In Azerbaijan, newspaper "Azadlyg" claims its website being attacked by hackers
The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS) of Azerbaijan has made a statement in connection with cyber attacks on the website of the opposition newspaper "Azadlyg" (Freedom). The very edition office of the newspaper "Azadlyg" reports on incessant cyber attacks on the Internet version of the newspaper starting from August 13.
The newspaper "Azadlyg" was established in December 1989, and it is one of the first independent newspapers in modern Azerbaijan.
On August 22, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent received the statement of the IRFS stating that "hackers used against the newspaper 'Azadlyg' the following methods of attacks: Layer 7, UDP, SYN flooding, and DNS reflection."
The IRFS associates the attacks on the newspaper "Azadlyg" with the upcoming presidential election in the country, the voting on which is scheduled for October 9.
"In terms of total control established by the authorities of Azerbaijan over TV Channels and Radio Stations, there are not a lot of remaining alternative sources of information. The newspaper 'Azadlyg' is one of them. However, hacking attacks deprive Internet users of access to the materials of the newspaper 'Azadlyg'," the statement of the IRFS quotes Emin Guseinov, Director of the IRFS, as saying.
