In Armenia, the protesters voice against violence applied to women

An action under the motto "Promise is promise" in protest against violence applied to women was held on June 25 inYerevan, said Satenik Gevorkyan, the event coordinator. The action was organized by the Women's Rights Centre and the network "Men against Abusing Women".

The organizers and participants were spreading leaflets among passing-by men with a question: "Do you promise not to use force against women?" Below, there were two answers: yes and no. The men voted and dropped the papers into the ballot box. At the end of the action organizers planned to burn down the papers with a negative response, but there were no such answers.

Violence against women is a serious problem of the Armenian society, Susanna Vardanyan, the chair of the Women's Rights Centre, believes. According to her story, to reduce the incidence of violence, in particular, in families, the problem should be addressed at the legislative level.

Ms Vardanyan has noted that her Centre had brought in a bill "On Domestic Violence" to the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, but the government has rejected it.
