Employees of Azerbaijani Ombudsman visit detainees after riots in Guba

On March 13, people from the office of the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan visited five detainees in the context of events in Guba on March 1, currently kept at the Baku SIZO (pre-trial prison), situated in the village of Kyurdakhany.

Each of the detainees was personally interviewed by Ombudsman's employees.

"They have no complaints about any violence applied to them during detention and their subsequent period in custody; no traces of violence were found on their bodies during examination," says the press release of the Ombudsman's office.

All the five are charged under Articles 186.1 (deliberate damage to or destruction of others' property) and 233 (organization of or participation in actions aimed at disturbing the public order).

The Ombudsman's office was the first official body to confirm arrests of citizens after events in Guba.

For nearly two weeks, the law enforcement bodies of the Guba District of Azerbaijan have been avoiding contact with the press. All the inquiries to the press service of the General Prosecutor's Office receive a standard answer: "The investigation is underway; the public will be further informed about the outcomes."
