ICPJ condemns threats against journalists in Azerbaijan

The International Committee to Protect Journalists (ICPJ) has resolutely condemned the threats addressed to Khadidja Ismailova, a journalist of the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty.

The statement of the ICPJ treats Ms Ismailova as "one of the boldest and most respected independent journalists in Azerbaijan," the Radio Liberty reports.

In connection with the threats addressed to Ismailova, the Corporation Radio Liberty/Free Europe also made a statement. It President Steven Corn has treated the incident as "an attempt of dirty blackmail unacceptable in a civilized society." "We are proud of Khadidja and fully support her activities," said Mr Corn and promised to meet Ismailova.

The journalist said that the threats against her were no surprise. "For a long time I'm engaged in investigatory journalism, including secret businesses of family members of President Ilham Aliev, revealed corruption at the highest level and disclosed secrets of offshore businesses members of the ruling family," Ismailova said in her statement.

So far, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent could not receive any comments at the law enforcement bodies on the journalist's statement.
