Swiss skier wins first World Cup alpine ski race in Sochi

The winner of the first World Cup competitions in alpine skiing, which started today in Sochi, was a Swiss athlete Bet Feuz.

The World Cup alpine skiing competition has started today in the city of Sochi, on the "Rosa Khutor" ski resort; on the first day of races the leading skiers of the world competed in the downhill race. Prior to the official start, they had three workouts on the route.

Today, the competition for the title of the fastest downhill skier was run by 64 skiers, but only 48 of them reached the finish line. The Swiss athlete Bet Feuz was the fastest – with 2 minutes and 14.10 seconds. The second and third places were taken by the Canadian Benjamin Thomsen (2.14.37) and Frenchman Adrian Teo (2.14.69), the "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" reports.

"The route is well prepared; and the organization is absolutely up to all our expectations," the "Sport-Express" quotes Gunter Guyar, the head of men's ski races at the International Ski Federation.

However, the well-known American skier Bode Miller suggested that the route in Sochi more suited for a Super-G competition that for the downhill race, the RIA "Novosti" reports.
