Azerbaijan: relatives of Turadj Zeinalov demand exhumation of his body to establish the reason of his death

In Azerbaijan, relatives of Turadj Zeinalov, who died last August at the SIZO (pre-trial prison) of the Ministry for National Security (MNS) of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic (NAR) reject the official version of the reason of his death. They believe that Zeinalov died from torture, and in order to prove that they agree to exhume his remains.

This was stated by Zeinalov's father and widow – Shuriya Zeinalov and Gulnar Agaeva – at a press conference on January 14 in Baku.

"For the sake of the truth, we agree to exhumation; provided, however, that the examination will be held by experts from Baku. After all that happened, we do not trust the authorized bodies of the NAR," said Shuriya Zeinalov.

"We insist on a new independent examination – let the truth be established," said Gulnar Agaeva.

The lawyer Asabali Mustafaev has informed journalists about the official response received to his request addressed to the MNS of the NAR in the context of Zeinalov's death.

"The letter from the MNS reads that the information about the death of Turadj Zeinalov in the SIZO from torture 'is the fruit of your imagination'," said Mustafaev. According to his story, the answer from the MNS was signed by Parviz Ismailov, a chief investigator of the Investigatory Division of the MNS of the NAR.
