UN Civilian Police in Abkhazia will not provide security and maintain public order

UN Civilian Police in the Gali region will take no independent actions on providing security and maintaining public order. Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba made such a statement in view of the inaccurate coverage by the press of the functions inspectors-specialists should discharge in the Gali region's security zone.

The United Nations recommended forming a limited civilian police unit within the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG). The elements of 12 people on the Abkhazian side and 8 - on the Georgian one will be mandated to carry out the observation, to advise local law-enforcement agencies and to assist with their consolidation.
