Armenia releases another political prisoner

Gabriel Gabrielyan, convicted for participation in the demonstration on March 1, 2008, has been early released today from the penitentiary institution named "Hospital for Convicts".

Mr Gabrielyan was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment under Articles 225 (organizing of mass disorders), 235 (unlawful acquisition, sale, storage, transportation or bearing of firearms) and 238 (theft of weapons and ammunition). He was granted an early-conditional relief (parole).

Earlier, the coordinator of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) expressed his confidence that under the pressure of the Council of Europe the Armenian authorities will have to release the country's political prisoners. Vardan Arutyunyan, a human rights activist, sticks to the same opinion.

Let us note here that this is the third prisoner early released within the last six weeks.
