Remains of an ancient Polovtsian settlement discovered in Kalmykia

In Gorodovikovsky district of Kalmykia archaeologists discovered remains of a settlement dating back to 10-11-th centuries AD, i.e. the period of existence of the Polovtsian khanate.

"As a result of mine workings of the shafts in Chapaevsky estuary where in the ancient times the lake of Tsigan-Nur was located German archaeologists discovered a foundation of an ancient structure, remains of bones and ceramics", Larisa Manzhikova, Head of Gorodovikovsky subsidiary of National Museum named after N.N. Palmov, reported.

A group of archaeologists who got interested in the discovery arrived from Germany specially for studies of the remains of the ancient settlement.

A laboratory analysis of the findings carried out in Moscow has confirmed the archaeologists' hypothesis: the fragments of ceramic tableware date back to 10-11-th centuries AD, the period of existence of Polovtsian khanate, "Interfax-Yug" reports.
