Young opposition activists detained by Police of Armenia released

In Yerevan, the four young oppositionists, who were detained this morning by the police, came to the populous rally of the Armenian National Congress (ANC), which began at about 7:30 p.m. local time.

Let us remind you that policemen detained Sarkis Gevorkyan, Vaagn Gevorkyan, Areg Gevorkyan and Sarkis Ghazarian, who participated in a picket in defence of political prisoners in front of the hotel "Yerevan", where the seminar "EU-Armenia: Civil Society" is held, and brought them to the police station of the Central Community of Yerevan.

Vladimir Karapetyan, a member of the ANC, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that policemen had no grounds for catching the young people. The police, in turn, stated that the young men did not obey the lawful orders of the policemen who guarded the public order.

In his speech at the rally, Aram Manukyan, an activist of the ANC and the chairman of the party named "Armenian National Movement", addressed the authorities and police with a call to release the detained young oppositionists. Otherwise, according to his story, protesters would go to the police building of the Centre Community with a demand to release the young guys from detention.

Levon Zurabyan, coordinator of the ANC, said at the rally, referring to the sources in the opposition, that soon the authorities will, in order to avoid sanctions of the Council of Europe, release all the 12 political prisoners.

The participants of the international conference drafted and signed a statement calling to release the detained picketers.
