In Karelia, two residents sentenced for beating an Azerbaijani

In spring this year two young men beat a young Azerbaijani on the motive of ethnic hatred. Today, it became known that they were sentenced.

According to the investigation, the incident happened in the city of Segezh. In April 2010, a local jobless person, 21, when being intoxicated, lured a 17-year-old Azerbaijani, who was born and lived in Segezh, into a local hostel. Then, together with his two friends, one of whom was a minor, they started abusing the young man because of his nationality, then beat him, as a result of which he was hospitalized. In the course of the incident, the attackers called themselves as skinheads.

The older defendant was sentenced to 1 year of conditional custody with a 16-month probation period. His juvenile accomplice was sentenced to seven months of corrective work with a probation period of one year, the "Interfax" reports.

The court has also upheld a civil suit with a demand to compensate the moral harm caused to the victim and obliged the defendants to pay out five thousand roubles each to the victim.

As reported by the "Sova" information-and-analytical centre, the third defendant, who participated in the beating, is being searched; and the case against him will be considered separately.
