Subscriptions are bagged for renaming Lesnaya Street after Anna Politkovskaya

The editorial board of the "Novaya Gazeta" in Moscow has started bagging subscriptions for commemorating Anna Politkovskaya and renaming Lesnaya Street, where she lived and died, in her honour.

"Today we mark the fourth anniversary of her death. Next year will be the fifth one; and under Russian laws we can name a street after a perished person. Anna lived and was murdered in Lesnaya Street (Forest Street - editor's note). There are no forests here. I think 'Lesnaya' can be moved somewhere closer to the edge of the city; and this street can be renamed after Anna Politkovskaya," said Oleg Khlebnikov.

According to his story, in order to achieve renaming, broad public participation is needed, "not political, but our own good will." "We believe that we need to bag subscriptions, and start doing it now, in view of the tremendous bureaucracy of our state," said Khlebnikov at the rally.

He informed the audience that special logbooks will be available at the office of the "Novaya Gazeta" for bagging subscriptions in support of renaming Lesnaya Street as Anna Politkovskaya Street. Everyone willing to support the initiative will be able to come to the office and put his or her signature in support of renaming; people need to have their passports with them - passport particulars will be put into logbooks.
