Former senator from Kalmykia accused of felony

The Zamoskvoretskiy Court of Moscow has sanctioned arrest of Igor Provkin, former senator from Kalmykia, suspected of sexual abuse of Moscow female students, the press service of the Court has reported today. Thus, the Court has satisfied the yesterday's petition of the investigation.

Under the law, Mr Provkin's arrest will last for two months, unless he manages to prove its illegality at the court of cassation. He is accused of sexual assault, threatening with up to 20 years in prison.

"According to the investigation, on July 1, 2010, at about 4 in the morning, Provkin, while in the car model Lexus GX 460, parked in the Krymskiy Val Street in Moscow, sexually assaulted a girl. In doing so, the defendant struck his victim several times in her abdomen and back," says the investigation.

The RIA "Novosti" reports that so far two criminal episodes are considered.

No information is reported so far about Igor Provkin's stand and his advocate's opinions as regards the presented charges.
