A Refugee from Abkhazia in Georgia won his law suit against Georgian authorities in the international court
Batalbi Saginadze, resident of Georgia, has won his law suit against Georgian authorities in the international court. The case dealt with eviction of Saginadze who is a refugee from the cottage he had been occupying since 1994.
Saginadze had formerly lived in Abkhazia and left it in connection with the armed confrontation of the beginning of the 1990s. In Georgia he was accommodated in one of the cottages belonging to the Ministry of Interior Affairs. However, later, in 2004, it was decided to evict him according to the order of Minister of Interior Affairs who was then holding the office.
The European Court of Human Rights based its judgment upon the law passed in Georgia in 1996 which grants refugees the right to use temporary dwelling and protects them from eviction.
"Georgia Online" reports that according to the judgment, Georgia must pay off to the plaintiff a compensation of fifteen thousand euros. Besides, the cottage must be returned to him for use until the moment when he goes back to Abkhazia or receives an alternative dwelling.
According to "Our Abkhazia", the process on Batalbi Saginadze's case in the European Court had lasted six years.
