ECtHR starts considering claim of six citizens of Azerbaijan against Armenia
On September 15, the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) began considering the claim of six Azerbaijanis against Armenia. The claimants state violation of their civil rights in 1991-1992 during the Karabakh war.
Elkhan and Adyshirin Chiragov, Ramiz Dzhebrailov, Akif Gasanov, Fekhreddin Pashaev and Garadzha Dzhebrailov - residents of the Lachin District of Nagorno-Karabakh, Kurds by their nationality, on May 17, 1992, lost their houses and all their property.
In their claim "Chiragov at al versus Armenia", the applicants insist that the Armenian government continues breaking their rights by refusing to pay compensations for what they had lost. The claimants demand that the authorities of Armenia return them back to their native places, and also compensate in full their material losses, the official website of the ECtHR reports.
According to Chingiz Askerov, authorized representative of the Azerbaijani government at the ECtHR, the hearing passed "in good conditions." He expressed hope for the positive outcome of the case, the IA "Trend" reports.
In its turn, the Armenian party insists that the issue is beyond the competence of the ECtHR and that the powers of Armenia do not cover the non-recognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and adjoining territories, the "News-Armenia" reports.
The claim "Chiragov at al versus Armenia" was lodged to the ECtHR on April 6, 2005, but only on March 9, 2010, it was brought to the agenda of the Grand Chamber of the ECtHR.
