Oil spill destroys crops in Dagestan
In the Derbent District of Dagestan, a break of an oil-extracting well rendered a significant ecological damage to local agricultural lands. Now, the oil spill covers the territory of about 60 hectares.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that the spill from an oil-prospecting well happened near Gilyar village, Derbent District of Dagestan.
According to local residents, they have lost all the crops grown up in this agrarian territory.
Representatives of the company-owner of the failed oil derrick state that the situation is under control: enough machinery is engaged in the area, and in the near future all the consequences of the spill will be eliminated.
As to Ilmudin Gairbekov, head of a division at the local department of the "Rosselkhoznadzor" (Russian Federal Agency for Agriculture Supervision), the derrick owners failed to present any documents authorizing them to extract oil. According to his version, "the fertile layer is destroyed in the territory of 60 hectares; there is a high probability that oil may get into the sea."
