In Azerbaijan, suspect commits suicide in SIZO
At night on August 3, a suicide was committed in the Baku pre-trial detention facility (known as "SIZO"). As reported by the Sabunchin District Prosecutor's Office of the city of Baku, Alim Ismajlov, 41, hung himself in the cell. The reason of his suicide is unknown yet. According to Elchin Bekhbudov, head of the Azerbaijani Committee Against Torture, it already the third suicide in Azerbaijan among persons kept in custody from the start of this year.
Ismajlov was accused under Article 234.1 (drug dealing) and kept at the Sabunchin SIZO.
The District Prosecutor's Office is investigating the fact of suicide.
The division for PR of the Penitentiary Service of Azerbaijan has confirmed the fact of death, but refused to make comments, referring to the investigation carried out by the Prosecutor's Office.
