Rights defender Tamara Karastelyova who is on treatment in Tbilisi needs help

Tamara Karastelyova, an activist from the Novorossisk Human Rights Committee (NHRC), who is treated for the fourth month for leukaemia in the capital of Georgia, needs monetary help.

She is in Georgia from mid-2009 as a master student at the Ilya Chavchavadze University in Tbilisi.

"I learnt that they have a master programme at the international school of Caucasian researches at the Ilya Chavchavadze University and lodged an application," Tamara told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

She planned to finish her studies and return to Russia; however, six months later she was diagnosed acute leukaemia. "I was lucky to get into a proper hospital and into proper hands," she said. "My attending physician - haematologist Irakli Topuridze - made a miracle."

"Tamara managed to get out of the heaviest condition," doctor Topuridze said. "And now we have complete remission."

Her urgent treatment required money. The University paid for the first round: the administration allocated 11,000 laris (about 6000 US dollars).

After the first round of chemotherapy Tamara Karastelyova is much better: she is able to get out of her bed. However, she still needs money for the second round of treatment, which costs 5000 US dollars. Besides, the Karastelyov family needs funds for transporting Tamara to Russia, as soon as doctors permit, for further treatment.

Tamara cannot pay for her treatment at the Tbilisi hospital by herself. She needs to buy or cook food in the hospital and pay for some medicines. Since stay in hospital is expensive, she goes there only for procedures. Her friends and colleagues try to raise money with the help of public organizations.

Let us remind you that in 2002-2006 Tamara Karastelyova and her husband Vadim organized mass resettlement of deported Meskheti Turks from the Krasnodar Territory to the USA.

According to Tamara, the NHRC was repeatedly exposed to pressure by the authorities. This February, her husband - human rights activist Vadim Karastelyov - was attacked and got to hospital. Because of incessant threats related to human rights activities of the NHRC and impossibility to ensure safe life Vadim had to move to Moscow.

  • Lawyers comment on scandal with equipment sale on behalf of "Akhmat" special unit

Lawyers have noted that it is practically impossible to hold the scammers accountable for the fact that they had sold stolen property, posing themselves as fighters of the "Akhmat" Chechen special unit. But these actions have seriously discredited the "Akhmat"; and it's possible that Chechnya's enemies are behind this, a political analyst has suggested.
