Former head of Volgograd Central district gets seven years of prison for bribery

Volgograd oblast court has passed a sentence to Alexander Novikov, former head of Volgograd Central district. He is convicted to seven years of imprisonment in a high-security colony.

The "Caucasian Knot" reported previously that Novikov was arrested in December 2008. According to the theory of investigators, the functionary wanted the director of a commercial company in Volgograd to pay him 1,250,000 rubles for signing reports on completion of works under a municipal contract.

The court has found the functionary guilty of receiving a bribe. Apart from imprisonment, Novikov is due to pay a fine of 500,000 rubles. Under a civil suit, the ex-head of the district administration has to pay 500,000 rubles to Svetlana Titova, deputy of Volgograd city Duma.

"The jury have managed to sort out all circumstances of the criminal case, and the court has imposed a fair punishment on Novikov", cites ITAR-TASS Sergei Kulakovski, representative of the state prosecution.

Note that corruption is a serious problem for Volgograd oblast. Specifically, a criminal case against the prosecutor of Sredneakhtubinsk district , arrested when receiving a bribe in the amount of 2 million rubles, in now under investigation there.

In May, Volgograd city court passed a sentence to Sergei Zadorozhny who, pretending to be an FSS officer, extorted from president of a high school of the city 50,000 euros and 100,000 rubles.
