In Armenia, experts worry about ecological situation in Yerevan

Implementation of many construction projects in the capital of Armenia is negatively affecting the environment. This was stated on June 5 at the press conference dated to the UN's World Day of Environment by Karine Danielyan, former minister of ecology of Armenia, now the chair of the Association "For Sustainable Human Development".

"Yerevan reminds a huge construction site. Everywhere new houses are built all the time. Quite often new buildings appear in place of green zones. If we don't take measures today, the consequences will be catastrophic," said the ecologist.
Silva Adamyan, chair of the public organization "Centre of Bird Fanciers", was also concerned of reduction of green zones, where private objects like caf?s and restaurants, and elite dwelling houses are built.

"The green zone shrinkage resulted either in disappearance or departure of many bird species from Yerevan, which is situated in the semi-desert-steppe zone. Many wild bird species engaged in natural war against rodents and insects have disappeared," said Ms Adamyan.

According to the Union of Greens of Armenia, since 1990 Yerevan has lost more than 1500 hectares out of 2000 hectares of green territory. In several recent years the capital has lost 23 green zones, as a result of it the air of the city has lost its ability to self-clear.
