Kalmykia: believers commit virtuous acts to mark Buddha's birthday

Today, Buddhists celebrate the most important anniversary of their religious calendar - the birthday, enlightenments and departure to Parinibbana of Buddha Shakyamuni. This year this day falls on May 27.

In Kalmykia, like in other Buddhist countries, the sacred month Ur Sar is not for bad-doers - it is the month for committing virtuous acts.

According to Telo Tulku Rinpoche, Supreme Llama of Kalmykia, Buddha's birthday is the culmination day of the sacred month Ur Sar, which is marked from May 14 to June 12 this year.

"It's my most favourite Buddhist holidays," said the churchman. "In this special month people accumulate positive karma, which will help them in future lives."
