Collection of Markelov's works presented in Moscow

On Monday, May 24, the A. Sakharov Museum and Public Centre in Moscow hosted a presentation of the memorial collection of lawyer Stanislav Markelov assassinated in January 2009; the collection includes his main articles, interviews and presentations.

The presentation was attended by well-known Russian human rights activists, members of the antifascist movement, where the murdered lawyer Markelov was an activist.

The foreword to the collection "Stanislav Markelov: Nobody but Me", which was prepared by Stanislav's friends, says that the book is not about the murder and not about the investigation - "it is about the fate of our contemporary, which has reflected the whole complexity and contradictions of Russian life in the border of millenniums."

The book has two parts: the first part comprises the lawyer's interviews and presentations, while the second one is a collection of reminiscences of his friends, colleagues, comrades-in-arms and co-thinkers.

At the presentation, Alexander Cherkasov, a member of the board of the human rights society "Memorial" shared his memoirs about Markelov. "Stanislav became really famous after his participation in two most resonant 'Chechen' cases, where he defended Russia's honour. When once someone will write about struggle against war crimes to Russia, he'll surely write, 'With participation of lawyer Stanislav Markelov, Yuri Budanov and Sergey Lapin - the first two military criminals, convicted for what they did in Chechnya, - were put behind bars.' It will remain forever," said the human rights activist.
