Center for Contemporary Art "Tobacco House" opened in Rostov-on-Don

Opening of the Centre for Contemporary Art "Tobacco House" was held in Rostov-on-Don on 24 May within the framework of the first South-Russian Biennale of Contemporary Art in the Don capital. Experts admit that such a large-scale display of contemporary artworks takes place for the first time here. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has attended the Center opening ceremony.

"To a certain extent, entrepreneur Ivan Savvidi says, this is the environment and the human soul sanation. We, professional tobacconist, will regard this event as compensation for that physical damage we make to human health."

The Biennale organizing committee member Tatiana Neklyudova believes the Center visitors should have a culturological turn, having realized that to be contemporary does not mean to be traditional.

One of the most important projects of "Tobacco House" brought from Moscow by its curators, members of the Russia's Academy of Arts, Sergei Denisov, and Ivan Kolesnikov, was the Dormitory suburb-2 project, which was transformed into a photo exhibition. The photos present outdoor installation in a typical dormitory suburb of Moscow composed of  such familiar household items as beds, that were transformed by the creative will of different artists.
