Russian warrant officer Khripun gets refugee status in Georgia

The Georgia's Ministry on Refugees' Matters and Accommodation has granted the refugee status to warrant officer Vitaly Khripun, a Russian frontier guard, who on December 21, 2009, deserted from his military unit deployed in Sinagur village in South Ossetia.

Let us remind you that on December 20 last year warrant officer Vitaly Khripun wilfully left his border check point, located in Sinagur village, Djava District of South Ossetia. He had his sub-machine gun with him. In Georgia, he applied for political asylum. A criminal case was initiated in the Russian Federation on the fact of Khripun's desertion and firearm plunder.

The "Gazeta.Ru" reports with reference to the press service of the above Georgian ministry that Khripun received his refugee status back on February 12.
